The history of Karachaganak is forever inscribed in the chronicle of Kazakhstan's oil and gas industry. Today, Karachaganak is a multi-billion dollar investment, record production volumes, innovative technologies and thousands of jobs. Since 1998, the development of the Karachaganak field, located in the West Kazakhstan region and one of the largest oil and gas condensate fields in the world, has been carried out by the international consortium of KPO consisting of “Eni”, “Royal Dutch Shell plc”, “Chevron”, “LUKOIL” and “KazMunayGas“.
Karachaganak covers an area of more than 280 square kilometers, and the initial balance reserves of oil, gas and condensate are 9 billion barrels of condensate and 48 trillion cubic feet of gas, with estimated total reserves of more than 2.4 billion barrels of condensate and 16 trillion cubic feet of gas. Since the signing of the Final Production Sharing Agreement, the partner companies have invested more than US $ 22 billion in the development of the Karachaganak field and the introduction of advanced industrial technologies that ensure the achievement of the most sustainable economic indicators during the implementation of the Karachaganak project. These technologies fully comply with Kazakhstan and international regulatory requirements in terms of industrial safety and environmental protection.
Implementation of global best practices, experience and expertise to provide high professional results on an international project, which became one of the flagships of the domestic oil and gas industry and the locomotive of the economy of the West Kazakhstan region. In 2019, KPO reached a record production level of 138 million barrels of oil equivalent of stabilized and unstabilized liquid hydrocarbons, crude and fuel gas. At the same time, the volume of re-injection of gas to maintain reservoir pressure was 8.7 billion cubic meters, which is approximately 47% of the total volume of gas produced.
In its production activities, KPO, being a socially responsible company, makes every possible effort to ensure sustainable development and effective use of the potential of Karachaganak to achieve maximum socio-economic benefits from the project for the Republic of Kazakhstan and the local population.
